Polymers, particles, and surfaces with hairy coatings: Synthesis, structure, dynamics, and resulting properties In this chapter, we discuss problems related to the synthesis, structure and dynamic behavior of macromolecular systems, in which many linear chains are anchored to other macromolecules, to nanoparticles or, in a general sense, to surfaces forming "hairy" coatings at these objects. Computer simulated and real systems are considered. In the preparation of such systems, both by means of adsorption and by means of synthesis, strongly competitive situations on the molecular level take place, which result in various, not necessary desired effects, such as high polydispersity of surface layers or backbone extension in molecular brushes. It is demonstrated how the considered molecular structures can influence the system dynamics and consequently the mechanical properties. Examples of new super soft materials based on a specific class of macromolecular architectures are presented.

Structure and dynamics in columnar discotic materials: A combined X-ray and solid-state NMR study of hexabenzocoronene derivatives The solid columnar discotic and liquid crystalline (LC) phases formed by alkyl-substituted hexabenzocoronene (HBC) mesogens have been investigated by a combination of X-ray scattering and a variety of advanced solid-state NMR methods. Correlations between chemical structure, molecular packing and dynamics are established. Maximum charge carrier mobility is observed for a crystal-like stacking of the disks in the column with optimized pi-pi interactions. For systems with lower intracolurnnar order the charge carrier mobility is slightly lower and slow axial motion of the disks around the column axes occurs.

Molecular dynamics in supercooled m-fluoroaniline Molecular dynamics of meta-fluoroaniline (mFA) - the system which makes a simple glass forming liquid - was examined by C-13 NMR and dielectric relaxation measurements. Spin-lattice relaxation times TI, nuclear Overhauser (NOE) factors of chemically non-equivalent carbons and dielectric retaxation in mFA were measured as a function of temperature. The analysis showed that the correlation function describing molecular dynamics in mFA could he well described in terms of an asymmetric distribution of correlation rimes predicted by the Davidson-Cole model. The overall correlation times of mFA. derived from the simultaneous fitting of our TI, NOE, and dielectric data (as well as of the dielectric data obtained by Roessler's group) to the Davidson-Cole model, follow the non-Arrhenius temperature type of the behaviour in accordance with the Vogel-Fulcher equation.
